February 28- March 4

 Feb 28-Mar 4

This week, Eagles worked on their Technical Writing for Writer's Workshop by learning all about User Manuals. We discussed the reasons why people don’t read manuals, how to make manuals more interesting or engaging, and then saw examples of boring, long car manuals, and short, fun robot manuals. They had several discussions about what would grab their attention and how they can use that information to write an engaging set of instructions. The Eagles worked on steps and an introduction that hooks the reader. They are focused on the writing sub-skill “Organization” for this session. They had a great discussion about how confusing it is when instructions are out of order and they had an opportunity to rank the robot instructions from 1 (not great) to 5 (excellent) when thinking about the order of steps.

In Quest, we learned about the Lever and Fulcrum, the Wedge, and the Screw simple machines. Our Eagles all had an opportunity to build each machine, test it using a variety of tools, and decide whether or not they would include that simple machine in their arcade game(s). They have had a lot of fun learning to make objects fly with the lever and fulcrum catapult, hammering in the wedge (a nail), and discovering exactly why a screw makes tasks easier. Each team continues to brainstorm about their arcade game. We saw some real-life arcade game examples throughout time, including vintage games made with wood, and others that were mechanical before video games were invented.

The Eagles were able to go outside and enjoy the warm, beautiful weather this week. They have worked to earn extra Free Time during Studio Maintenance at the close of each day. The eagles have stepped up their teamwork and everyone is enjoying the extra sunshine. Hard work pays off! Mr. Matty let them know we will soon discuss a new Studio Maintenance game to make it more fun and continue to care for the studio with excellence. The extra time outside could be inspiring hard work during core skills. Several heroes have leveled up in Core Skills the past two weeks and we have seen several friends earn new Freedom Levels!

In Drama, our teams are working hard to draft their scripts and prepare to present their plays to the group. They will begin voting in Week 4 and they are working hard on revisions to make their scripts excellent! The Eagles had time on Thursday to rehearse out loud. They have already begun to think about props, costumes, and scenery. As a result of having plenty of recycled materials this session, they will get to use imagination and creativity to build their characters and scenes.

P.E. was in the warm, sunny weather all week. They have a new set of options for their warm up, workout, and game. Miss Karsen encourages the Eagles to use their PE time to its fullest! They are having so much fun using their bodies in new ways, building strength and stamina, and discovering their leadership skills. As it warms up, we are learning to take care of ourselves by drinking tons of water.
